So as promised I am here with the first of many Writing prompts of the year. At this time as I stated in my previous post which can be found here I have been searching for writing prompts. When I started this journey I thought that I might have some in one of my writing books that I own, and that was not the case. While they are good resources they just did not have writing prompts as I thought they would.
I have a tool set called “THE WRITER’S TOOLBOX” by Jamie Cal Callan that I thought would have some ideas, and while it is advertised as “creative games and exercises for inspiring the “write” side of your brain” I did not feel it is what I was looking for. It does have a nice feature of helping you if you are stuck on your first line of a story, as well as ones for the middle and ending. It has a lot of different things, but I just did not feel it was what I was looking for, so I went to the internet to find some writing prompts from other sources.
While I was looking I discovered that there are a lot of options out there and I have been working on compiling a list of the ones I find interesting. With that being said I feel that I am falling a little behind on what I was planning to do. It was not my intention to take this long, but in the course of going about my days I happened to be playing with my youngest child and was getting some Nerf guns ready for a little Nerf battle when he decided he needed to try and shot one of them right at my face. Unfortunately he was able to do just that and ended up hitting me right by my eye and made life a bit difficult for a few days.
Well here it is a few days later, and I am feeling a bit better and even though I have a ton more options I want to go through to find some more writing prompts I have decided that I will pick one for the month from the ones that I have. That way we can all have time to go through the writing process and I will have the rest of the month to add to the list. Once I choose the prompt for this month I will remove it from the list so it does not have a chance to be chosen again. I will just find a randomized picker online and enter the number of options and it will pick for us. At this moment I have discovered about 18 ideas that I liked.
I have found a random picker here and it has chosen our option for us. The option it chose was number 13 on my list and is this: 45. Write a story that begins with a neighborhood or family potluck. What dish does each person bring? What does the food selection reveal about the individual? What underlying or external conflicts arise during the get-together? Add taste, sound, colors, and climate to the picture. 101 Creative Writing Prompts from The Write Life By Emily Withnal.
At this time people may not be having many gatherings, and in some areas even when things are not so restrictive neighborhoods no longer have big gatherings in their own neighborhoods, but this one seems like a good starting prompt.
I feel that not only can this writing prompt help us with our writing, but it can also bring light to any situation that may arise in our everyday life with our own neighbors. I feel like with this prompt you can see the multiple sides of any gathering and try to see other people’s point of view.
Well there you have it. Let’s get down to writing our little stories and I will continue to look for more prompts. Again tell me if you have some prompts you would like us to use. I am still researching how to set it up where we can share our writings together. I do know that if you want to you can share them on my Facebook page which you can find here, but I would like to get it somehow on here, since I know not everyone uses Facebook or social media in general. Happy writing and I hope to see what you have all written.
