What is the Best Writing Tool?

Over the years I have found myself using a pencil anytime I have wanted to write. This has been my favorite way to write, although I also have enjoyed using different colored gel pens. While pens are a great way to write I have always wanted to erase things. When they made erasable pens I did try them, yet I didn’t like them. That was back in the 1990s, so I just continued to write with pencils.

My favorite kind of pencil has been a regular number 2 pencil that you sharpened. I have used and still occasionally use mechanical pencils. I enjoy the fact that they never had to sharpen. Still, I prefer a regular pencil even to a mechanical one.

Besides the fact that you can erase a pencil, I cannot tell why I prefer using it over a pen. I feel some of it is the way that it is so easy to write with and flows very nicely. Pens can do the same things yet I seem to hold a pen tighter causing my hand to hurt.

Earlier in the year I was taking a Creative writing college course and trying to get more creative practice. While I am always trying to find ways to spark my creativity, I also am looking for tips from successful writers. In my search for tips, I came across an interview on YouTube with Author Neil Gaiman, by Tim Ferriss. This was my first time watching this YouTuber. If you would like to check out the video you can find it here.

In this interview, Gaiman talks about notebooks he prefers to use when writing a first draft, advice he has for aspiring writers, the way he works on projects, his preferred writing instrument, and a few other things. While I had heard of Fountain Pens, I had never thought of them as a good choice for story writing, but more for things such as calligraphy and fancy writing. Upon watching Gaiman’s interview and hearing him talk about these pens I had the desire to try one out to see how it writes.

Well, I did not just go out and buy a pen. Gaiman mentioned that not everyone is a fan of the pen. The tip he gave on finding one if interested, yet the place he mentions I know there was no way for me to be able to get there. I looked at a few on Amazon but did not purchase any. When Amazon notified me that one of the pens I had looked at was on a lightening deal I used a gift card to purchase it. When the pen arrived, I tried it out and I am so grateful to have learned about this pen.

I earned the gift card from Mistplay where I play games for points. If you are interested in checking out Mistplay use my link here. The link allows me to earn a small amount of points.

Since I was taking college courses over the summer and I enjoy using different colors for the different courses, I ended up purchasing a pack of colored fountain pens to use for my classes. The first pen I bought happened to be one I could buy new ink for to replace the vials.

I would recommend giving them a try. Here are a few options from Amazon. There had been an Amazon Basic one that I bought, but it seems to have been sold out. You can get 20 vials of black ink for $12 here. There are color vials for sale for about $9 for six different colors here. I thought that fountain pens would be expensive, but there are a lot of options on Amazon that are fairly priced such as this one.

I feel as though you just have to find some good ones. Discovering that I enjoy using this pen over any other pen. This pen just seems to glide over the paper and is easy to use.

Let me know what kind of writing material you enjoy using. I am interested in finding new things to use and love learning what others like to use. I am looking for new notebooks to use and would love any suggestions on some or suggestions about good fountain pens.

Crafting with SVGs

As I have mentioned in a previous post I have been exploring ways to get my creativity flowing again read about here, as well as finding myself and remembering things that I enjoy doing. First one you can find here, and the second one here. One of those things is to put together my photos in a scrapbook and even though I have not been doing this for a few years, I wanted to get back to it. For a little while I had been subscribed to an art journal subscription and enjoyed doing this. The artist Jessi who created the monthly boxes, I believe, talked about how putting your momentos together in a book is considered Art Journaling. This reminded me of how much I have enjoyed doing this and how I still keep a hold of items from different things we have done over the years to put into books.

Well all of these thoughts lead me to remember people talking about die cutting machines and how I had been interested in these throughout the years, yet had never tried or looked into them before, so I felt like asking for one for my birthday a few years ago. After remembering about die cutting, I remembered hearing about the company Cricut and thought it was a die cutting machine company. While Cricut is a cutting machine, it ended up being a lot more than what I thought I was getting into. I received my Explore Air 2 for my birthday back in 2020 when we were shut up in our houses at the beginning of the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Upon receiving this new machine I realized it was not what I was thinking I was asking for. I will admit that I did not research a Cricut and the die cutting machines that I was expecting to receive. While Cricut came around and started out as a die cut machine that you used templates with, it has evolved into more.I became a little overwhelmed with how exactly to use the machine, what an svg was, where to find them and all the possibilities I had with this new machine.

Gold Bug Mine

A couple of weekends ago my children and I took the opportunity to visit one of the many mines in California. We were invited to go along with one of my brother’s and his family. My children enjoy spending time with all of their family members and we have been taking every opportunity that we can, especially since moving closer to family at the beginning of the year.

The mine they had chosen to visit is about an hour away from where we live; taking California Highway 50 to the east in the city of Placerville. Placerville is a city located in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

Upon arriving at the Gold Bug Mine we were able to purchase tickets for a self guided tour of the mine. This tour uses an app you can download to your phone. If you do not have a phone you can download the app with, they have a device to use as well.

Adventures at LEGOLAND!

This fall when the school had its fall break my husband and I decided to take a vacation with our children even though only one of them goes to school at this time. We went to the San Diego area and took them to LEGOLAND. This was the first time any of us had been to LEGOLAND and we thought it was a really good place to take them that would have rides as well as a place that features something they all love.

All of my children enjoy playing with Legos and while there are times when they will not play with them for a while they always come back and play with them for days. They love to build the different sets that they have received or to just build whatever they feel like making with their Legos.

While there are still a lot of things that not all my children could do at LEGOLAND, they all found something to do and had a fun time including my youngest who wasn’t even two years old yet when we were there. He enjoyed going on some of the rides, and did not enjoy other ones at first, but eventually warmed up to it.

View of Life

Everyone always has their own view of life and the things going on in them at any given time. Sometimes our views are pessimistic while other times they are optimistic, even other times we can have an indifferent view.

In July we ended up moving our family again in order to get a bigger place to fit us all since the children are growing and needing a little more space. Through the process of unpacking my children decided to help with some of the boxes in my room. Not only did they help to unpack them they then decided to help me with a knitting project by unraveling the yarn I had been working with. This resulted in a big tangle of yarn connected to my knitting needles.

Upon my discovery of this fun they had with my knitting I was a little frustrated, but I started removing the knot and was making great progress on it until I had to go and take care of life. When I left the job at hand to take care of other things, my children got a hold of it again and undid the progress I had made as well as making it an even bigger mess of the knotted yarn.

About Me

My name is Dixie Satterfield. I am a wife of twelve years and a mother of almost seven years. I have four children, three boys, and a girl. My middle children are a boy and girl twin.

Life with twins has been an adventure and I know that it will be a very long adventure. So far all of our children love to learn new things and are always ready to learn. Since my oldest has been going to school his brother and sister have wanted to as well. We do learning things at home all the time, but they see big brother go off to school and want to be like him.

I am an avid reader, although with four young children I do not always have the time to read the things that I want to read. I do always try to read books with my children in hopes that they will always enjoy reading as they grow. I know that every book is some kind of adventure to be read, some are just the adventure of someone’s real life. My all-time favorite book is Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card. I would have to say my favorite author as a child was Dr. Suess. I remember reading all of his books that we had in our house and to this day I enjoy reading his books to my children

Journey to Finding Oneself Part One

Recently I have been doing a lot of self-reflection and trying to understand myself better. It has come to my knowledge that I have been living life in a somewhat unhealthy way, and it has been this way for a very long time. Even though I am realizing that there are things that are going to have to change in the way that I deal with some things that come up in life I know that this is also going to take me some time to learn new ways of dealing with everything and a lot more learning.

When I was growing up I was always reading books, and while I am an avid reader I am coming to understand that this was a way to escape some things in life. I know there are a lot of people who get drawn into the book they are reading and I do the same thing, but I am realizing that I also used the books as a way to hide from some of the things that I was dealing with.

While this is something I felt I needed to do in order to get through life, I have been doing it so long that I do not know how to change it. I am trying to learn new ways of dealing with hardships in life and how to be a different person.

Exploring Our City

Yesterday my children and I went to find a park to have a picnic at and enjoy some time outside since most of this week someone in our house has been sick and we have not been able to go many places. At first, I was just going to take them to a place that we have been to a few times, but then I decided to ask them if they wanted to try a new park and since we have only been living here for about a year and a half there are plenty of new parks to explore. The majority said to go to a new park and so we headed to one that we had not been to before, but upon arriving there it was so packed there was no place to park and did not look like we would have a place to sit for lunch. With this being the situation we decided to head up the little mountain here called Alum Rock Park where there is a park and a lot of hiking areas.

There are two different playgrounds, one for older children that has big slides, swings and monkey-bars, and then there is another one with a cement eagle and ants and baby swings. My children love going to the younger playground and making up adventures while pretending to be baby eagles with the big eagle slide. We had some food while they would run and play in between eating. The youngest had fun just trying to go for a little walk on his own, which made me have to go and chase him down. Then you have my middle son who just loves to wander off sometimes and so after we ate we decided to go on a little walk.

Teaching Children

I have many years of experience working with and teaching children. I helped to care for three of my five younger siblings, worked in three different daycares, watched my nephews and nieces, as well as raising my own four children starting six years ago. Through all these years it saddens me to see slip-ups people have when trying to help children to learn. I of course especially hate when I find myself doing the things that I know can be more harmful to a child’s learning. I know that we all make mistakes since we are only human, but I also know I can do better at teaching my children and the children around me. I know that I am not an expert on children, even with all the experiences I have had, but I still feel that things I am learning or have learned can help someone else to find the path that they may be seeking to help their children.

I had all of this written out once before, but felt it was sounding much more judgemental than I wanted to and so here I am rewriting it. I am in no way a judge to anyone on how they help children but am hoping to make sure we are aware of the way we interact with children to keep them positive about learning. I do believe that sometimes when we talk with children we may forget that there is still a lot they do not understand. I try to remember that these little brains are interested in learning, but can only take in so much at a time.

I know that as human beings we sometimes get set in our ways, and while that can be good in some instances, yet there are definitely times when it can have the opposite effect of what we are looking for. As an example, I have noticed people who may have grown up with dogs as pets and are used to dog training methods, but when they are around young children and end up using such methods on the children it will have a negative effect. There have been times when I find myself saying things that I know can hurt the joy of learning and I have to correct it so that my children will want to continue to learn. Now I am in no way an expert on dog training as I have only had dogs for pets in my adult life and out of all the ones I have had I have only been responsible to help train two of them. This being said maybe I am just naive, but when training a dog and telling it “bad” for something wrong it did, the dog gets that it was in the wrong and after a few times of hearing this stops the behavior. I understand using short commands such as this, but I think it still has a negative effect on the animal. While I have seen the same technique used on children occasionally I know that this negative effect can cause the child to lose interest in the thing they were trying to learn.

Fun in the Snow

While we have been in New Mexico my oldest son was hoping for some snow. Well on Wednesday there was a little bit of snow with rain, which meant that it was not going to stick since the rain just made it wet and the snow was unable to stick in Albuquerque. In other parts of the state it did stick a little, and the mountain was starting to look pretty in white.

Thursday it was sunny most of the day which allowed it to dry the ground. By the middle of the afternoon, there was a weather warning issued for the area about a blizzard possibility. This made us hope that we would be able to play in the snow the next day and when it started turning night the snow did start to fall.

We met some family members for dinner and when we got to the restaurant there was a little bit of snow falling, but not much. By the time we were done eating the snow had started to fall more and the roads were starting to get icy because the first bit of snow had melted on the roadways and it was turning to ice. When we arrived back at the uncle’s house we were staying at, our Uncle Monty was getting ready to head home and before he did he gave my one-year-old some of the fresh snow and he loved it so much he asked for more two times before we got him ready for bed.

Friday morning we awoke to about 5 or more inches of snow on the ground. I sent my oldest out with his cousin to gather up some snow into some bowls and then when my husband returned home from the store he made some snow ice cream with the children’s help. They all enjoyed getting to mix the snow with the milk. It was very simple to make. He just added two capfuls of vanilla a few splashes of milk (we used some cow milk and then did another one with Almond milk because we have some dairy allergies in the family,) and some sugar just to taste. All of the children loved the snow ice cream.
