So one of the things I have always enjoyed in life has been reading books. Now that I have four young children at home I find it hard to read sometimes. A few years ago most of my family and I stayed with my parents while we were in between houses and I joined my Mother’s book club and enjoyed reading and discussing books with other people.
While we have since moved again and I am still a part of their Facebook group and have access to the list of books they are reading throughout the year I have not been able to get myself into reading as much as I would like over the last couple of years.
Now I am not saying that I am not reading any books, I am finding it hard to pick books that I really want to read or that I have a strong desire to read. When I started thinking about this blog one of the things I wanted to incorporate into it was the idea of having an online book group where we can discuss a book each month that has been chosen to read.
This was an idea I had last year and while it has taken me so long to get this blog up and going I still have not been able to find the book that I want to have the first book club read. As I said I have had a hard time finding books that are really interesting to me at this time. I don’t know if it is just because I have so many things going through my head with my four children or if it is the other aspects of my life, but I am still on the lookout for a starting club book.
So I have talked a little bit with a few of my reading friends about my ideas here and I really liked the ideas my friend and sister-in-law Amber had about starting the discussion of the book before actually reading it. To me this seemed like an idea about before you actually start the book you talk about what things you think might come up in the story. You may be able to discuss what you see as issues the characters may face throughout the book. Then also after the book has been read you can compare the things you thought might happen with the things that did actually end up happening and the reactions of the characters
Another idea I have had was that since this was an online discussion you can talk about each chapter as you are reading through the book. Or maybe even just the important events as they happen. This is not something you can always do when meeting with a group of people once a month after everyone has finished reading the book.
It feels like there are just so many options to an online book club opposed to a once a month club. Now if you are in a book club that meets weekly or even every other week you may be able to discuss your books a little more than those once a month, but I still feel like these are some very good ideas for an online or virtual book club.
